Abstract

TCP is a widely used transport layer protocol. TCP exhibits in various flavors. Out of which New-Reno TCP and HSTCP enhances the overall performance of the network by reducing the congestion. However the performance of New-Reno TCP is very sensitive to abrupt changes in the traffic load. Nowadays all data communication is based on multimedia. A Switching TCP (SwTCP) mechanism is proposed which gives optimal performance for dynamic change in the traffic load and the dynamic change in the number of end users who access the multimedia data. Based on extensive simulations conducted using network simulator-2 (ns2), it is evident that SwTCP mechanism reduces the congestion and provides higher throughput compared to New-Reno and HSTCP.
